Standing proudly in the heart of Wymondham, the Green Dragon has welcomed locals and travellers alike since 1317. Through centuries of change — from medieval market days to modern pub life — it has remained a place of warmth, conversation, and community.
What began as a coaching inn has evolved over generations, shaped by the people who passed through its doors, raised a glass by its fire, and left their mark on its walls.
A Pub Steeped in History
Wymondham itself is one of Norfolk’s most historic towns, and the Green Dragon has long been part of its story. Positioned along historic routes and close to the Abbey, the pub became a natural meeting point for traders, locals, and visitors.
Over the centuries, the building has been adapted and extended, but much of its original character remains — from heavy timbers to hidden corners that hint at its past lives.
The Tunnel to the Abbey
Local legend speaks of a hidden underground tunnel believed to once connect the Green Dragon to Wymondham Abbey. While time has sealed its entrance, stories persist of secret passages used centuries ago — whether for monks, merchants, or matters better left unspoken.
